Identity Exploration & Coming Out

Counseling for adults questioning their sexuality or gender identity, considering coming out, or trying to understand themselves outside the expectations they grew up with. Sessions are online across Idaho, with in-person sessions in Boise by request.

Some people arrive in therapy already knowing who they are and just need help with what comes next. Other people arrive because something has been quietly unsettled for a long time, and they want a safe place to look at it without committing to an answer in advance.

This page is for the second group.

You might be questioning your sexuality after years of assuming you were straight. You might be in a long-term relationship and noticing feelings that don't fit the frame you built your life around. You might be wondering about gender in ways you've never let yourself wonder out loud. You might know something is true about you and not know what to do with it yet.

There's no rush here. The work isn't to land on a label by session ten. The work is to give yourself the room to ask questions you may have been told you couldn't ask, and to figure out what you actually want.

I work with adults only.

What Brings People In

People come to identity work from a lot of different starting points:

  • Questioning sexuality as an adult, including later in life

  • Wondering about gender, gender expression, or how the labels you've used fit

  • A long-buried feeling that's gotten louder, or a recent experience that pulled something into focus

  • Religious or family upbringing that made certain questions feel off-limits

  • A current relationship you love and don't want to disrupt, alongside feelings that don't fit it

  • Considering coming out, planning how and when, or recovering from a coming-out that didn't go well

  • Wanting to understand yourself without the pressure of telling anyone else yet

Anxiety and depression are often part of this. Sitting with an unresolved question about yourself for years has a cost. So does the work of finally letting yourself ask it.

How We'll Work

My approach is person-centered, which means I treat you as the expert on your own life. I'm not going to tell you what your identity is, push you toward a particular conclusion, or assume that exploration must lead to a specific destination. Some clients land on a new understanding of themselves. Some land back where they started with more clarity about why. Some find that the label question matters less than they thought it did, once they have space to ask it.

Together, we'll look at what's actually going on: the feelings, the history, the relationships, the messages you absorbed about who you were supposed to be. We'll trace the patterns back to where they started so you can sort what's yours from what was given to you, and figure out what you want to do with each piece.

A lot of this work happens alongside other things. Religious trauma, family-of-origin patterns, anxiety, depression, and relationship work often surface in the same room as identity questions. That's expected. We don't have to pick one thread to pull on.

I bring my own lived experience to the work. I grew up in a small Texas town in a religious family, came out as gay, and spent years untangling who I actually was from who I was raised to be. I won't pretend my path is your path, but I won't be learning the territory on your time either.

A Note on What I Don't Do

I work with adults, not minors. I'm not a gender specialist, and I don't write letters for gender-affirming medical care. If those are part of what you're looking for, I can help you point toward someone who does that work. What I can offer is the exploratory and emotional work alongside or in advance of those decisions: figuring out what you want, who you are, and how to take care of yourself through the process.
